Early Life and Education

Lewis Tipton Stringer was born on July 15, 1930, in Evanston, Illinois. Her family later moved to the Washington area, where she finished high school at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School. Public records and obituary coverage also say that both of her parents graduated from the University of Chicago, and that her father worked as an executive in broadcasting.

Her full given name, Lewis Tipton Stringer, caused an early college mix-up. She was accepted to William and Mary College under the mistaken belief that she was male, and because there was no room for her in the women’s dormitory, she chose to attend the University of Maryland instead. At Maryland, she studied theater, acted in university productions, and was crowned homecoming queen in 1951.

Broadcasting Career

Stringer built her television career at WRC-TV in Washington, D.C. She hosted cooking, homemaking, and weather programs on both television and radio before becoming the station’s resident weather girl in 1953. Sources from the Fisher Center describe her as one of the first women to appear on a large-market news broadcast, which made her an early presence in a field that offered few opportunities to women at the time.

Her work was not limited to weather. She also sang at the Shoreham hotel near the television station, and one source says she moved through an underground tunnel between the hotel and the station while handling both floor shows and weather duties on the same nights. This shows how active and demanding her early broadcasting life was.

Stringer also got national attention through a Life magazine appearance in 1955 with her cartoon creation Senator Fairweather. That appearance helped shape her public image as more than a local weather presenter. She was seen as a smart, polished television personality who combined performance, style, and broadcast skill.

She later presented weather on Afternoon, the Willard Scott show that also featured Jim Henson and his early Muppets. The Fisher Center account says the Washington business community often invited her to promote local products and appear in parades and ceremonial events, which shows how widely recognized she had become in the city.

Marriage and Family

Stringer met newsman Chet Huntley in 1959, and the two married later that year. Archives West records their marriage announcement and also notes that Huntley met his second wife, Lewis Tipton “Tippy” Stringer, in 1959. Washington Post coverage also says she left Washington for New York when she married Huntley.

Their marriage did not produce children, according to the Huntley archive materials. Public records and obituary reporting keep her closely linked to Huntley because she became widely known under his surname after the marriage.

After Huntley’s death, Stringer later married actor William Conrad in 1980. Conrad’s biographies identify her as his spouse, and obituary coverage from 2010 also places her in that later chapter of his life. Her name in public records then appeared as Tipton Stringer Huntley Conrad or similar variants.

Later Years and Legacy

Stringer stayed connected to public service and broadcasting interests later in life. In 1995, she founded the Stringer Foundation, which supported public broadcasting, literacy groups, animal protection groups, women’s shelters, and reproductive education. That work gives a clear picture of the causes she valued in her later years.

She died on October 1, 2010, at her home in Los Angeles. The Washington Post reported that she was 80 and had died after a brain tumor. Obituaries also describe her as a charming Washington weather personality and a pioneer for women in early television news.

Her legacy matters because she worked in television during a period when women were still rare in on air broadcast roles. She helped shape the early image of the TV weather reporter, and she did it with a mix of skill, personality, and public visibility that stood out in the 1950s and 1960s. Her career is remembered not only through her marriages, but also through her own work as one of the early female faces of American local television.
