Heycar Online Used Car Marketplace Closure | Why the Popular Car Platform Shut Down

Exclusive Magazine by Exclusive Magazine

Heycar shut down because the standalone business lost too much money to keep going on its own. In June 2025, Volkswagen Financial Services said the Heycar platform itself was still running, but its parent company, Mobility Trader, had entered liquidation and the business was being folded into VWFS.

What Heycar Was Built to Do

Heycar launched in the United Kingdom in August 2019 as an online used car marketplace backed by Volkswagen Financial Services, Volkswagen, and Renault. VWFS had already described Heycar as a premium used car platform and had brought Daimler on board as an investor earlier in the project. The platform was meant to support digital car buying and strengthen the group’s position in the used car market.

Volkswagen Financial Services also tied Heycar to a wider digital and mobility strategy. In its 2023 annual report, the company said it wanted to promote sales of Group products, strengthen customer loyalty across the vehicle life cycle, create synergies, and sustain a high return on equity. That matters because Heycar was not just a side project. It was part of a larger plan to build digital mobility services around the Volkswagen Group’s brands and dealer network.

The Financial Losses Behind the Decision

The clearest reason for the shutdown was the money. Car Dealer Magazine reported that Heycar lost £30 million in 2022 and £22.4 million in 2023. The same report said revenue fell to just £7.4 million. Those figures show a business that was still far from break even even after several years in the market.

VWFS was also the dominant owner. Car Dealer reported that VWFS held 78 percent of Heycar, while Volkswagen held 13 percent and Renault held 9 percent. When the largest shareholder no longer wants to keep funding losses at that level, the business usually has limited room left to continue in the same form. That is exactly what happened here, as the company later confirmed that assets and technology were being absorbed into VWFS instead of being supported as a separate marketplace.

Why the Business Model Struggled

Heycar was built to compete with large used car platforms such as Auto Trader and Motors. That is a difficult market because scale matters. Buyers want broad choice, dealers want traffic, and both sides usually stay with the platform that already has the strongest audience. Heycar entered that space with a premium and trust focused offer, but the later losses show that the model did not turn into a strong enough commercial engine.

The company also spent years expanding its footprint. Volkswagen Financial Services’ own press release archive shows Heycar moving from Germany into the United Kingdom in 2019 and later into Spain in 2020. The archive also shows Volkswagen Financial Services bringing Volkswagen AG in as a new investor for the used car platform in February 2020. This tells us the group kept pushing the project forward, but the extra reach still did not produce the financial result the owners wanted.

What Volkswagen Financial Services Did Next

By late June 2025, VWFS was no longer presenting Heycar as a stand alone growth story. Instead, the company said it had acquired certain business and assets of Heycar UK. It also said it was integrating Heycar’s technology and expertise into its own business and was onboarding remaining Heycar UK employees. In the same update, VWFS said the platform itself remained fully operational.

That update is important because it shows the shutdown was not a simple case of a website disappearing overnight. The parent company, Mobility Trader, entered liquidation, but VWFS kept the platform running during the transition. So the better way to describe the event is that the independent Heycar business was wound down, while parts of the platform were kept alive inside VWFS.

What Happened to the Staff and the Business Structure

The closure affected more than the brand name. Car Dealer reported that several job losses had already followed before VWFS clarified the platform’s future. It also said that remaining Heycar staff were being integrated into VWFS. That points to a restructuring rather than a clean ending, with people, technology, and selected assets moving into the parent group instead of being lost completely.

Volkswagen Financial Services had already been reorganising its wider structure before the Heycar decision. In its 2023 annual report, the company said it had started a comprehensive restructuring program in 2023 to bring German and European entities under a new financial holding company. The report also said the company wanted clearer regional focus and more efficient implementation of its sales strategy. Heycar sat inside that broader environment, so the marketplace was being judged not only on growth, but also on how well it fit the group’s future structure and returns.

The Partridges Closure Royal Disappointment story also demonstrates how even well known and respected brands can face difficult commercial decisions when market conditions become increasingly challenging.

Why the Closure Matters for the Used Car Market

Heycar’s shutdown matters because it shows how hard it is to build a profitable used car marketplace, even with strong parent companies behind it. VWFS had the brand power, dealer links, and funding support of the wider Volkswagen Group, yet the business still posted large losses and weak revenue. That is a clear sign that digital car retail is not easy to scale in a crowded market.

It also shows how large automotive groups now think about digital platforms. VWFS said its business goals include loyalty, synergies, and using data and technology to support mobility services. In that context, Heycar’s technology may have been more valuable inside VWFS than as a separate marketplace with its own heavy cost base. The shutdown therefore reflects a strategic shift as much as a financial one.

Similar to the Heycar online used car marketplace closure, the Whitgift Centre Croydon Shopping Mall Closure highlights how changing consumer habits and financial pressures can force long established businesses and commercial platforms to restructure or shut down.

Key Facts About the Heycar Closure

Heycar launched in the UK in 2019, backed by VWFS, Volkswagen, and Renault. It later expanded into Spain and kept building its used car marketplace model. But its latest public results showed heavy losses in 2022 and 2023, with revenue falling to £7.4 million. By June 2025, VWFS said the parent company had entered liquidation, while the platform itself stayed operational inside VWFS.

The main reason it shut down as a separate business was simple. It did not earn enough to justify continued support in its original form. VWFS then chose to keep the platform’s useful parts and fold them into its own business instead of continuing to fund Heycar as an independent marketplace.
